Why Should I Try Yaupon Tea?
Why Should I Try Yaupon Tea?
If you've never tried yaupon tea, you may be wondering why you should.
After all, there are thousands of teas to choose from. Why try one you've probably never heard of?
My answer is simple: because Rise Yaupon makes tea unlike any other tea you're likely to have in your cupboard.
It has an incredible history, a naturally smooth and refreshing taste, it is incredibly easy to prepare, and it gives you caffeine from a plant that is native to North America.
And perhaps most importantly, you don't have to choke down something you don't enjoy just because you've decided it's good for you.
Yaupon is one of those rare drinks that can be both delicious and a meaningful part of your daily routine.
Yaupon Has an Incredible American History
One of the first reasons I think everyone should try yaupon is because of its history.
Yaupon holly has been consumed in North America for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence indicates that yaupon was being consumed on the Florida peninsula at least 8,000 years ago, and likely much longer.
Long before tea became something Americans associated with China, Japan, India or England, people here were drinking yaupon.
Indigenous peoples throughout the Southeast used yaupon for centuries. It was an important plant culturally and socially, and it was valued as a naturally caffeinated beverage.
I think that's a remarkable story.
We tend to think of tea as something that comes from somewhere else. We picture tea plantations in Asia or Africa and assume that if we want caffeine from a plant, we have to import it.
But that's simply not true.
We have a naturally caffeinated plant growing right here in North America.
And here in Florida, that realization can be even more surprising.
We have customers who discover that the plant growing naturally in their own yard may be yaupon holly.
The oldest tea in the world could literally be growing in your backyard, and you may never have known it.

Yaupon Tastes Really, Really Good
Of course, history alone isn't a reason to drink something every day.
The tea has to taste good.
And this is where I think yaupon really separates itself.
Our yaupon has a smooth, light, clean and refreshing flavor. If you've had green tea before, yaupon may remind you of it.
But there is a very important difference.
Yaupon naturally lacks tannin.
Tannins are responsible for much of the bitterness and astringency that people associate with traditional teas. They're also one of the reasons tea can become unpleasant if you leave it steeping for too long.
Yaupon doesn't have that same problem.
You can steep it longer without suddenly ending up with a bitter cup.
In fact, one of the biggest reactions we get from customers when they try our tea for the first time is:
“Wow!”
They can't believe it's not sweetened.
Many people have an expectation that tea is naturally going to have a bitter aftertaste. They're accustomed to adding sugar, honey, cream or other ingredients to make it more enjoyable.
Then they taste yaupon.
And they're surprised that they don't need to.
You Don't Have to Worry About Oversteeping Yaupon
I'm a big fan of easy.
And yaupon is easy.
You don't need to treat it like a delicate specialty tea that requires a stopwatch and a precise water temperature.
Put your yaupon tea bag in your cup, add boiling water and let it steep.
That's it.
If you forget about it for a while, you're not going to ruin your cup of tea.
If you're busy, you can start your tea and get distracted. You can come back to it later. It's recoverable.
And because yaupon doesn't become bitter in the same way traditional tea can, you can even get multiple steepings from the same tea bag.

For me, that's one of the most practical reasons to make yaupon part of your daily routine.
It fits into your life instead of requiring you to change your life for your tea.
Yaupon Gives You Caffeine From a North American Plant
Another reason I think everyone should try yaupon is the caffeine.
Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed substances in the world, and most of us have a pretty familiar relationship with it.
Coffee.
Tea.
Energy drinks.
But what if your caffeine came from a plant that was native to North America?
That's one of the things that makes yaupon so fascinating.
Yaupon holly is naturally caffeinated, making it North America's only naturally caffeinated plant.
At Rise Yaupon, we're particularly passionate about this because we believe Americans should know that there is an American-grown caffeine option.
We don't have to assume that caffeine has to come from somewhere across an ocean.
What About the Caffeine Experience?
This is another area where our customers tell us they notice a difference.
Yaupon contains caffeine as well as theobromine, another naturally occurring compound found in the plant.
We hear customers describe it as feeling alert and aware without the uncomfortable jitters they're accustomed to with other caffeinated beverages.
You May Find Yourself Using Less Sugar
Here's another unexpected benefit of the flavor.
Because yaupon doesn't have that bitter tannic aftertaste, you may not need to add as much sugar, honey or creamer to make it enjoyable.
There's a difference between sweetening something because you like it sweet and sweetening something because you're trying to cover up bitterness.

We've had customers tell us that when they switch to yaupon, they naturally find themselves using less sweetener.
That's especially interesting for people who are consciously trying to reduce their sugar intake.
You don't have to give up a sweetened tea if that's what you enjoy. But you may find that you need less of it because you're not fighting a bitter aftertaste.
What About the Health Benefits of Yaupon?
There is a lot of interest in yaupon because of its naturally occurring antioxidants and other plant compounds.
Yaupon contains polyphenols and other compounds that are being studied for their potential health effects, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
We also hear anecdotal stories from customers who tell us that incorporating yaupon into their daily routine has made them feel better or has helped with issues they're dealing with.
You Don't Have to Suffer to Be Healthy
This is probably my biggest philosophy when it comes to yaupon.
There are plenty of foods and beverages that people consume while holding their nose and convincing themselves they'll eventually get used to them.
I don't think wellness should have to work that way.
If something is going to become part of your daily routine, you should actually enjoy it.
That's what makes yaupon so exciting.
It can be delicious.
It can be refreshing.
It can provide naturally occurring caffeine.
It can be incredibly easy to prepare.
And it can become a small daily ritual that gives you a few minutes to slow down.
Tea Can Be More Than a Beverage
One of the things I love about tea is that making a cup forces you to pause.
Even if it's only for a few minutes.
You heat the water.
You steep the tea.
You take a breath.
You drink it.
In a world where we're constantly moving from one thing to the next, that little ritual can be valuable.
It's simply a moment for yourself.
Who Should Try Yaupon?
My answer is pretty simple: everyone should try it at least once.
If you already drink tea, try yaupon.
If you love coffee, try yaupon.
If you're looking for a different source of caffeine, try yaupon.
If you're interested in American-grown products, try yaupon.
If you're trying to reduce the amount of sugar you're adding to your beverages, try yaupon.
If you're simply curious about the plant growing in your backyard, try yaupon.
And if you think you don't like tea because you've only experienced bitter, oversteeped tea, definitely try yaupon.
You might be surprised.
Start With the Flavor You Already Love
One of the easiest ways to try yaupon is to start with a flavor profile you already enjoy.
At Rise Yaupon, all of our blends start with yaupon, but we create different flavor profiles around that base.
If you like traditional green tea, try America's Classic, our pure yaupon.
If you like Earl Grey, try Florida Earl Grey with its bright bergamot and citrus notes.
If you like chai or warming spices, Healthy Kick combines yaupon with cinnamon and ginger along with floral notes.
If you like fruity teas, Strawberry Zen is a favorite, especially iced.
If you love mint, Chocolate Mint-Up puts spearmint and peppermint front and center with a hint of chocolate.
And if you're someone who likes to experiment, we've even created a Custom Build-Your-Own Yaupon Blend Kit.
Create Your Own Yaupon Tea
Our Custom Build-Your-Own Blend Kit is designed for people who want to experiment.
You start with a yaupon base and experiment with different ingredients to create your own recipe.

It's simple, it's fun and it's a great way to figure out what flavors you personally enjoy.
It also makes a unique gift for someone who loves tea, cooking or experimenting with flavors.
And the best part is that if you create something you absolutely love, we can recreate that custom blend for you in the future.
So you don't just have to find your favorite yaupon tea.
You can create it.
Why Should You Try Yaupon Tea?
I could give you a long list of reasons to try yaupon.
But if I had to narrow it down, I'd say these are the big ones:
- It's delicious and naturally smooth.
- It doesn't have the same bitter tannic quality found in traditional teas.
- It's easy to prepare and can't be oversteeped.
- You can get multiple steepings from one tea bag.
- It provides naturally occurring caffeine from a North American plant.
- It has a fascinating history dating back thousands of years.
- It may help you reduce how much sugar or creamer you use in your tea.
- It gives you an opportunity to incorporate a simple, enjoyable ritual into your day.
- It's something genuinely different from the teas most Americans have grown up drinking.
But there's one reason above all others that I think you should try it.
You might love it.
And isn't that really the point?
