When people stop by our booth and see America's Classic Yaupon Tea, the first question is almost always the same:

"What's yaupon?"

That's the challenge - and the opportunity.

If we were selling donuts, we wouldn't have to explain what a donut is. But we're introducing people to a tea they've never heard of, even though it has been enjoyed in North America for thousands of years.

Every conversation starts at the beginning.

We tell people that yaupon holly is the only naturally caffeinated plant native to North America. We explain that Native American tribes drank it long before Europeans arrived. Then we hand them a cup.

Almost every time, the reaction is the same.

"Wow...that's smooth."

Why We Created America's Classic Yaupon Tea

America's Classic isn't just another blend.

It's our attempt to honor the pure yaupon tea that Native American tribes considered sacred for thousands of years.

Every blend we make at Rise Yaupon starts with America's Classic as its foundation. Before we add herbs, fruit, spices, or botanicals, we begin with pure yaupon holly.

We want people to experience the tea exactly as generations before us experienced it.

The tea itself deserves that respect.

A Tea That Helped Shape Early America

We live where the Timucua people once lived, so their history means something to us.

When early Spanish missionaries landed in St. Augustine and began documenting the lives of the Timucua, they repeatedly mentioned yaupon tea.

When they asked about the center of medicine, the answer was yaupon.

When they asked about religion, ceremonies included yaupon.

When they asked about social life, the answer was yaupon.

When they asked about trade and commerce, once again, the answer was yaupon.

Yaupon wasn't simply a beverage. It was woven into daily life.

People carried yaupon on their backs for hundreds of miles to trade with tribes throughout the Southeast and beyond. It was valuable enough to become part of an extensive trading network long before modern roads existed.

Even older evidence tells an incredible story.

Archaeological discoveries from the Windover site in Florida suggest that people were drinking yaupon tea between 7,800 and 9,000 years ago.

When you hold a cup of America's Classic, you're drinking something connected to one of the oldest continuous tea traditions in North America.

That's something worth preserving.

The Best Thing About America's Classic Is What's Missing

People often ask us what America's Classic tastes like.

I usually describe it as being similar to a green tea, but smoother.

Then I tell them the best thing about the tea isn't what's in it.  It's what's missing.

Yaupon naturally contains no tannins.

Tannins are what give many black teas - and even green teas when oversteeped - that bitter, astringent finish people have come to expect.

Without tannins, America's Classic delivers a clean, refreshing cup from the first sip to the last.

That's why so many people who tell us they "don't like tea" end up changing their minds after one cup.

What they really didn't like was the bitterness.

A Tea You Can't Ruin

One of my favorite demonstrations happened at the World Tea Expo.

We started the morning by placing our tea bags into hot water.

Then we got busy talking with visitors.

Eight hours later, the tea bags were still in the pots.

We kept serving tea all day.

It was still smooth.

Still refreshing.

Still delicious.

With many traditional teas, leaving the leaves in the water that long would produce an overwhelmingly bitter cup.

America's Classic simply doesn't behave that way.

You can steep it multiple times, and you don't have to worry about accidentally ruining your cup.

That's one of the reasons we tell customers:

Before founding Rise Yaupon, I spent years as an airline pilot.

One thing I learned during those years was that traditional caffeine wasn't always my friend.

Coffee could make me feel jittery.

Sometimes that jitteriness became a distraction when I needed to stay calm and focused.

Yaupon was different.

Customers tell us they experience that same difference.

Many describe feeling alert without feeling anxious.

One reason may be that yaupon naturally contains significantly more theobromine than green tea. Theobromine is a naturally occurring compound that provides a gentler stimulant effect than caffeine alone.

Everyone experiences caffeine differently, but many people tell us they appreciate the smoother experience that yaupon provides.

Thousands of Conversations Have Taught Us Something

After serving countless cups of America's Classic, we've noticed a pattern.

People who describe themselves as "coffee people" often become yaupon fans.
