Introducing America's Roasted and Bold American: Two New Ways to Experience Yaupon
At Rise Yaupon, we're always looking for new ways to help people discover just how good yaupon tea can be. This fall, we're excited to introduce two new additions to our product lineup: America's Roasted, a medium roast, and Bold American, a dark roast.
Both blends start with the same plant we know and love: yaupon holly, America's only naturally caffeinated plant. But by changing how we prepare the leaves, we can create dramatically different flavor experiences.
If you love black tea and want something with a little more depth, America's Roasted might be your new favorite. If you gravitate toward strong, robust flavors and are looking for an alternative to coffee, Bold American was developed with you in mind.
And if you're already a yaupon purist who loves the clean, natural taste of our America's Classic, these new additions give you even more ways to enjoy 100% yaupon.
Here's how we got here, what makes these new roasts different, and why we're excited about the possibilities.
Why We Decided to Roast Yaupon
There were several reasons we wanted to explore roasted yaupon.
First, we've seen other companies in the yaupon space offer roasted products, and we knew it was an area worth exploring. But more importantly, we regularly meet customers at local events who sample our teas and tell us they're looking for something a little stronger or bolder.
Our existing lineup offers a variety of flavor profiles, but we didn't have quite the right option for people who prefer a more robust cup of tea. We wanted to give those customers something that would meet their preferences while staying true to what makes yaupon special.
There was another reason, too: history.
Yaupon has a long and fascinating Indigenous history in the southeastern United States. Indigenous peoples prepared and consumed yaupon long before it became a product on today's tea shelves. Historical illustrations from the 1500s depict fire-roasting yaupon as part of ceremonial practices associated with warriors preparing for battle.

Roasting was one of the historical ways people prepared this plant, and we wanted to explore that tradition while developing a product that met our standards for flavor, quality, and consistency.
We weren't interested in roasting yaupon simply because it was something new to offer. We wanted to do it well, create distinct flavor profiles, and give customers more choices.
From the Forest to the Roaster
One of the things that makes Rise Yaupon different is that we have a hands-on relationship with our product from the very beginning.
Our yaupon leaves are foraged from wild trees in Florida by our second-chance harvesting team. When the leaves arrive at our facility, we wash and sanitize them before spreading them out on our drying tables.
For America's Classic, those air-dried leaves become the finished tea. It's a straightforward approach that allows the natural character of yaupon to shine through.
For our new roasted teas, we take those same sanitized, dried leaves and put them through a roasting process.

That sounds simple enough, but getting the roast right took experimentation, new equipment, and a fair amount of trial and error.
Our First Roasting Experiment Didn't Go Quite as Planned
Whenever you're developing a new product, there are things you can plan for and things you learn the hard way.
We invested in new equipment to help us roast yaupon consistently. We needed to determine the right temperature, how long to roast the leaves, and how much material to process at a time.
Our first attempt with the new equipment was pretty short-lived. We put the leaves into the roaster, and they promptly caught fire because the temperature was much too high for the leaves we were working with.

That experiment didn't last long, but it taught us something important right away: roasting yaupon requires its own process. We couldn't simply assume that the equipment settings or techniques we'd use for another material would work for these leaves.
From there, we adjusted and kept experimenting.
Eventually, we brought together our production team, along with friends and family, to taste samples roasted to different levels. We wanted to hear from people with different palates and preferences rather than make the decision based on one person's opinion.
Through that process, we settled on two distinct roast profiles that we felt delivered the flavor experiences we were looking for.

That's how America's Roasted and Bold American came to be.
Meet the New Roasted Yaupon Blends
America's Roasted: A Medium Roast With Subtle Smokiness
America's Roasted is for those who want a little more depth from their cup without an overpowering smoky flavor.
We wanted to use heat to toast the leaves and develop their flavor without excessively charring them. The result is a medium roast with a subtle smokiness that adds complexity to the natural character of yaupon.
Think of it as another way to experience the plant you already know, with a little extra dimension.
If you enjoy black tea and appreciate a fuller flavor, this is a great place to start. It's also an excellent option for existing yaupon drinkers who want to explore something different while keeping their cup focused on pure yaupon.
Like America's Classic, America's Roasted is made with 100% yaupon. There are no additional tea ingredients or flavorings needed to create its distinctive character. The difference comes from how we prepare the leaves.
Bold American: A Dark Roast for Robust Flavor Lovers
If America's Roasted is about adding depth, Bold American is about turning up the intensity.
With this dark roast, we wanted a dramatically smokier, more robust flavor profile. We had coffee drinkers and people who prefer strong black tea in mind: those who want a cup with real character and a satisfying depth of flavor.
But here's what makes yaupon interesting.
Yaupon naturally lacks the tannins associated with the astringent, drying sensation you can experience with many traditional teas. That means you can enjoy a bold, roasted flavor without the same bitter finish that some people find unpleasant in strongly brewed tea.
And because it's yaupon rather than coffee, it offers a different drinking experience from your typical cup of joe.
If you've been searching for a coffee alternative but don't want to give up the satisfaction of a dark, robust cup, Bold American is worth trying.
Both America's Roasted and Bold American are made from 100% yaupon. We're not adding coffee or other tea leaves to create a darker flavor. We're using different roasting techniques to bring out different characteristics in the same plant.
How Roasting Changes the Flavor of Yaupon
One of the things I find most exciting about developing these products is showing people how much preparation matters.
When people hear that yaupon comes from a holly plant, they may imagine that there's only one flavor to discover. But the way you prepare the leaves can make a significant difference in the finished cup.
Our America's Classic showcases yaupon in its air-dried form. America's Roasted introduces a little more depth and subtle smokiness. Bold American takes that smoky, robust character much further.

It's the same plant, but a different preparation method creates a very different experience.
This is one reason we're so excited about the future of yaupon. Once you start exploring how processing changes its flavor, the possibilities for new products and blends become much broader.
We're starting with pure yaupon because we want people to experience what the plant itself can do. Now that we've developed roasting profiles we're happy with, we have a foundation for exploring additional flavor combinations in the future.
There's more to come, but first, we want to give these two new roasts their moment.
Is Roasted Yaupon a Good Alternative to Coffee or Black Tea?
We think roasted yaupon deserves a place in both conversations.
If you enjoy black tea, America's Roasted gives you a fuller flavor with a hint of smokiness. Bold American takes that experience in a darker, more intense direction.
If you're a coffee drinker, Bold American offers another option for those times when you want something robust and satisfying without brewing coffee.
Of course, yaupon isn't coffee, and we don't think it needs to pretend to be. It's its own beverage, with its own history, flavor, and naturally occurring caffeine.
But we also recognize that taste matters. People aren't going to switch to a new beverage simply because someone tells them it's good for them. They have to actually enjoy drinking it.
That's a philosophy we take seriously at Rise Yaupon. We want to make tea that tastes great first and gives people a reason to come back for another cup.
One of yaupon's advantages is its lack of tannins, which helps give it a smooth finish without the characteristic astringency of many teas. Some people also find that coffee or strongly brewed tea doesn't agree with their stomachs. If that's been your experience, roasted yaupon may be worth exploring as an alternative, although individual responses will vary.
And while we can't promise that yaupon will eliminate every issue someone experiences with coffee or tea, we can promise that we've put a lot of thought into developing roasted options that deliver the bold flavors people are looking for.
Three Ways to Explore Pure Yaupon
With the addition of America's Roasted and Bold American, you now have three ways to experience our pure yaupon, which is available as a bundle, called American Yaupon Tea Bundle.
-
America's Classic: Start here if you want to experience the natural character of air-dried yaupon.
-
America's Roasted: Choose the medium roast if you're looking for added depth and a subtle smoky flavor.
-
Bold American: Go for the dark roast if you prefer a dramatically smoky, robust cup.

If you're already a fan of America's Classic, we encourage you to try the new roasts side by side. It's a fun way to discover the differences that preparation alone can create.
And if you've never tried yaupon before, this is a great opportunity to find out which style suits your palate.
You might be surprised by how different three teas made from the same plant can taste.
What's Next for Rise Yaupon?
For us, these new products represent the natural evolution of our lineup.
We're always looking for ways to innovate, respond to customer preferences, and introduce flavor profiles that we believe people will love. We want to give more people a reason to discover yaupon, whether they're longtime tea drinkers, devoted coffee drinkers, or simply curious about something local.
Starting with pure yaupon has been an intentional choice. By learning how to roast the leaves consistently and developing two distinct profiles, we've opened the door to more possibilities for future products.
We'll continue exploring those opportunities, but we're not interested in innovation just for the sake of having something new on the shelf. Our goal is to create genuinely good tea that gives people more choices and makes it easier to enjoy this remarkable American plant.
And as always, we want to do it in a way that reflects who we are as a company: hands-on, thoughtful about our ingredients and processes, and committed to making a product we're proud to share.
